Rubber & Polyurethane Machining

Rubber & Polyurethane Machining

With over 60 years of experience, Henry Gallacher provides precision CNC machining for rubber, polyurethane, and plastic components. Using advanced CNC milling, turning, and routing, we supply bespoke parts and OEM consumables to your exact specifications.

Machining rubber and polyurethane offers a cost-effective alternative to moulded or cast parts, eliminating expensive tooling while allowing for tight tolerances and precise finishing. This makes it ideal for prototypes, specialised components, and smaller production runs.

We also supply a full range of plastic machining services, working with an extensive stock of plastic materials, including sheet, rod, and tube forms.

Applications

Typical uses include profiled seals and gaskets, wipers, bushes, spacers, damping elements, rollers, and replacement parts for moulded rubber components.

Availability

Machining is a bespoke service, so to provide an accurate quote and manufacture your part, please contact us with a detailed dimensional drawing or an unworn sample, along with the specified rubber or polyurethane grade.

Polyurethane Grades (Turned) - Hydrolysis Resistant

Our hydrolysis-resistant polyurethane grades provide excellent load-bearing strength, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, and tear strength, with strong resistance to oil, water, and grease. They are well-suited to steam and hot water environments where long-term durability is required.

This polyurethane grade is suitable for lathe turning, but not suitable for CNC routing or milling.

*Our standard stocked grade is the FDA-approved red; other grades can be supplied on request.

Nitrile Rubber Grades (Turned)

Nitrile rubber is highly resistant to petrol-based fluids, oils, and greases, and offers strong mechanical properties, including abrasion resistance and tensile strength.

It is commonly used in automotive applications. These grades are suitable for lathe turning but not for routing or milling.

Grade Colour Temperature (°C) Shore Hardness
Standard Black -35 to +110 85°A (±5)
Hard Black -30 to +110 90°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved White -30 to +105 88°A (±5)
Soft Black -35 to +110 73°A (±5)
Low Temperature Black -50 to +105 82°A (±5)
Carboxylated (Abrasion Resistant) Black -30 to +110 89°D (±5)

Hydrogenated, Hard Black -20 to +150 95°A (±5)
Hydrogenated, Soft Black -35 to +150 75°A (±5)

EPDM Rubber Grades (Turned)

EPDM is widely used for seals and gaskets in outdoor environments due to its outstanding resistance to water, ozone, and ageing. It is a robust material that performs well when exposed to alkalines, diluted acids, and ketones.

These grades are suitable for lathe turning but not for routing or milling.

Grade Colour Temperature (°C) Shore Hardness
Standard Black -45 to +135 87°A (±5)
WRAS Approved Black -50 to +135 97°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved White -55 to +135 88°A (±5)
Soft Black -53 to +135 76°A (±5)
Soft, FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved White -50 to +135 77°A (±5)

Silicone Rubber Grades (Turned)

Silicone rubber offers a broader temperature range than many other rubbers, along with excellent release characteristics and resistance to ozone, weathering, UV light, and moisture. All grades are FDA-approved for food contact.

These grades are suitable for lathe turning but not for routing or milling.

Grade Colour Temperature (°C) Shore Hardness
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved White -60 to +210 84°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved Blue -60 to +210 84°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved Red -60 to +210 83°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved Translucent -60 to +210 79°A (±5)

FKM Rubber Grades (Turned)

FKM is a premium rubber known for its outstanding resistance to high temperatures, acids, petrols, and oils. It maintains flexibility when exposed to ozone, flame, and heat.

Also known as FPM or Viton®, these grades are suitable for lathe turning but not for routing or milling.

Grade Colour Temperature (°C) Shore Hardness
FDA, EU1935/2004 & EU10/2011 Approved Brown -25 to +220 85°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved White -25 to +210 84°A (±5)
Standard Black -20 to +220 80°A (±5)
Soft Black -25 to +220 74°A (±5)

Neoprene Rubber Grades (Turned)

Neoprene is a preferred choice for outdoor sealing due to its excellent weathering, ageing, and ozone resistance. It is compatible with most oils and greases and offers moderate abrasion and tear resistance.

These grades are suitable for lathe turning but not for routing or milling.

Grade Colour Temperature (°C) Shore Hardness
Standard Black -40 to +100 81°A (±5)

Technical Specification

Polyurethane & Rubber Grades (CNC Milled or Routed)

The polyurethane and rubber grades detailed above are available exclusively for turning, making them ideal for custom flat circular seals with defined outer and inner diameters. For more intricate machined components, we utilise our milling and routing capabilities on standard sheet materials.

For further information on available grades, please refer to our polyurethane sheet and rubber sheeting pages. Note that machining suitability requires a minimum shore hardness of 70°A.
